Archaeological Site of Akrotiri & Village of Oia

June 15

Board your air-conditioned motor coach in Athinios for the 30-minute journey to Akrotiri.

Located on the southwestern tip of the island, the site was discovered in 1967 by Professor Spyros Marinatos. Subsequent excavations brought to light a remarkably well-preserved site, featuring two- and three-story houses decorated with frescoes, an advanced drainage system, and many objects of artwork, pottery and furniture. Reclaimed from the earth, the remains of the city offer a picture of a society that, for its time, was well organized and prosperous. Akrotiri’s epoch of productivity and affluence came to an abrupt end when a volcanic eruption buried the entire town. Your visit gives you the chance to appreciate not only the ancient finds but also the recent improvements to the grounds and the structure that houses the site, including a modern bio-climatic rooftop that protects the ancient settlement, which is still being excavated.

Your adventure continues as you rejoin your motor coach and enjoy a 30-minute drive, crossing the island to reach what is perhaps its most picturesque town, Oia. Once a major fishing harbor, the village is today a quiet retreat. Built high up on the ridge of red rocks, Oia boasts breathtaking views of the blue Aegean Sea.

Take some time to wander along the town’s narrow lanes and admire the old, beautiful houses and tiny shops.

After about 45 minutes, leave Oia and return to Fira Town, where you may either take the cable car down to the port or remain in town to investigate its streets and various shops on your own.

Important Notes: As this excursion involves approximately one hour of walking at the Akrotiri site and approximately 30 minutes of walking in Oia, including over uneven and cobblestone surfaces, it is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. It is recommended that guests wear flat, comfortable shoes. Some crowding can be expected at Akrotiri. The order of sights visited may vary. This excursion will operate in all weather conditions. Pre-reservation of this Crystal Adventures excursion is recommended.

June 18

After a brief transfer by shuttle from the pier to your coach, begin a sightseeing drive through the Sorrento Hills. As you follow the narrow road along the side of rocky cliffs overlooking the sea, enjoy breathtaking views of Sorrento Bay. Soon, you will arrive in the Marina del Cantone Bay where the famous Michelin Restaurant Quattro Passi is located.

Upon arrival at the restaurant, an expert sommelier will welcome you and reveal the secrets of la buona cucina (good cuisine) in one of the most exclusive restaurants in the area.

Located between Capri and Positano, immersed in the magnificent countryside of Marina del Cantone, the restaurant “Quattro Passi” boasts an excellent wine cellar, dug out of the tufa rock and well stocked with the finest Italian and International labels. The unique setting, the libations and gourmet cuisine will fascinate you. There, you will enjoy a taste of bruschetta accompanied by various types of local cheeses and wines.

After your tasting, you will re-board your coach for the return drive to Sorrento where you will have the possibility to explore the main center independently or return directly to your Crystal ship.

Although the sights visited on this excursion are manual wheelchair accessible, guests must be able to embark and disembark the minibus with little to no assistance. All manual wheelchairs must be collapsible and be easily stored onboard the minibus. This excursion is not recommended for guests with sensitivity to motion sickness. Pisa Highlights

June 21

Your exploration begins with a 30-minute drive via air-conditioned motor coach to Pisa. Visit the Piazza dei Miracoli, one of the finest architectural ensembles in the world. From here, continue to the Duomo, a masterpiece of Romanesque design dating to the 11th century. While visiting the baptistery, admire its unusual dome and imposing gates.

Nearby teeters the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the city’s central attraction. During the tower’s construction in the 12th century, the foundation shifted before the third tier was completed. Architect Bonanno Pisano was devastated; however, rather than becoming a disaster, his tower became internationally famous.

Today, the elegant turret, from which Galileo tested his theories of gravity, deviates more than 15 feet from the perpendicular. Although recent engineering efforts have secured the tower’s longevity, it remains one of the most mystifying sights in the world.

All too soon, re-board your motor coach and return to your Crystal ship.

Important Notes: It is recommended that guests wear flat, comfortable shoes and dress conservatively for their visit to the Duomo. Ladies must cover their knees and shoulders, while gentlemen must wear pants. Afterward, guests may go inside and visit independently. Restroom facilities are limited on this excursion. This excursion will operate in all weather conditions. A minimum number of bookings is required for this excursion to operate. See information concerning special cancellation conditions. A Closer Look at Gaudí

June 25

“Creation continues unceasingly through the media of man. But man does not create, he discovers.” – Antoni Gaudí

Begin your excursion with a brief drive to the Sagrada Familia. Construction of the Sagrada Familia, or Church of the Holy Family, began in 1882 and remained incomplete at Gaudí’s death in 1926. Work continues on the structure, but without any sure idea of what Gaudí intended. Join your guide for a walk inside the church as Gaudí’s creative, although controversial, genius is discussed.

Park Güell was designed by Gaudí and was intended as a hillside garden suburb of Barcelona. Enjoy an approximately 45-minute exploration of the park’s pavilions, grand stairway, winding paths and plaza.

Before returning to the pier, pass through the Passeig de Gracia, the widest avenue in town lined with a selection of modernist homes designed by Gaudí like the Casa Milà, better known as “La Pedrera House” and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Farther along, pass through the “block of dissension,” so called for the area’s various architectural styles, for a glimpse of Casa Batlló.

All too soon, it will be time to leave the surreal world of Antoni Gaudí and return to your Crystal ship.

Important Notes: As this excursion involves approximately two hours of walking, it is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. It is recommended that guests dress in warm, layered clothing and wear flat, comfortable shoes. All guests who visit the Sagrada Familia must dress conservatively; ladies must cover their knees and shoulders, while gentlemen must wear pants. As the Sagrada Familia is a work in progress, it is not uncommon to see workers operating cranes and setting up scaffolding. Local regulations require motor coaches to remain in designated holding areas, therefore guests will be required to walk approximately 15 minutes to reach the Sagrada Familia. The order of sights visited may vary. A minimum number of bookings is required for this excursion to operate. See information concerning special cancellation. This Crystal Adventures excursion MUST be pre-reserved.
